The famous `Shiratori *(White bird) legend of Yamato Takeru`.
On Yamato Takeru's return to the eastern country for subjugation, he died in Nobono*(Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture) with Yamato Province close at hand.
Though it's considered his spirit became a white bird and flew away, it points to the white heron being the `white bird`.
Therefore the heron is considered the messenger of the gods who is closest to Yamato Takeru.
