The bullfinch is considered to be in a deep relationship with Sugahara Michizane. There are various views, but opinion is that when Sugahara Michizane was attacked by a bee, a bullfinch ate the bee and so saved him. Also, there is an opinion that when an insect was eating construction material meant for Tenmangu, a bullfinch ate the insect before flying off.
Therefore there is the unique Shinto ritual called "Usokae Shinji" in the Shinto shrine (Tenmansha) where Michizane Sugawara is enshrined.
