She's universally accepted as being a tutelary god, and is considered to be the supreme Japanese god.

Her father Izanagi instructed Amaterasu to preside over Takama no Hara*(the heavens) thereby controling other gods, but a pivotal event occured thereafter; the famous `Opening of the Gate of the Celestial Rock Cave`. Amaterasu became disgusted by the terrible acts of her younger brother god, Susanoo and so hid in Iwato*(the rock door of the heavenly cave). On hiding, the sun was lost. The world was plunged into darkness, and series of an evil disasters befell it. The gods, who were troubled by this, tried to entice Amaterasu from Iwato by dancing, singing, laughing and making offerings in front of  Iwato. Amaterasu heard their efforts and, curious to know what was going on outside the cave, showed her face. The merry-making of the gods had been successful and Amaterasu eventually appeared in full. As she did, the sun returned to the world and darkness and evil were slowed down.

She's the god of  `appreciation of existence in itself`.
