アメリカから帰国した私は公的な資格を取ろうと思って、とりあえず英検１級の過去問を書店で入手した。そして、知らない単語や表現を見つけてウンザリした。
もはや、高校生の時のように
「頑張って勉強しないと」
と自分を責める気になれなかった。私はネイティブの助けを借りて問題を解き始めたが
「これは何だ？なんで、日本人のお前がこんなものを」
と言う。それで、
「どういう意味？」
と尋ねると
「こりゃ、シェークスピアの時代の英語だよ」
と笑っていた。
When I returned from the U.S., I decided to get an official certification, so I got the past exam questions for Eiken Level 1 at a bookstore anyway. And I was disgusted to find words and expressions I did not know.
It was no longer like when I was in high school.“I had to study hard."
I couldn't bring myself to blame. I started to solve the problems with the help of native speakers, but
“What's this? Why do you, a Japanese, do this?"
he said. So I asked
"What does it mean?"
He laughed and said,
"This is the English of Shakespeare's time."
