Amazon River
Today we're going to talk about the Amazon River, one of the great natural wonders of the world. At about 6,400 kilometers it's the second longest river in the world ― the largest river if you go by the amount of water that flows through it.
As you know , it's in South America. It starts in the Andean Mountains in Peru. And it winds its massive way through Colombia, Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Brazil. Brazil is where it meets the Atlantic coast, where it spreads out into a huge estuary.
What I love about studying the river is the wildlife. There are over 3,000 species of fish there. It's home to the piranha, which I'm sure you've all heard about, flesh-eating fish that feed in gropes, usually on dead animals but sometimes attacking livestock. It's also home to the boto, the largest species of river dolphin. And there are anacondas, one of the largest snakes in the world. Let's not forget, too, that the river is surrounded by the largest rain forest in the world, which is also home to extraordinary animals and plants.
Incidentally, did you know the Amazon got its name from Greek mythology? One of the first Europeans to explore the area back in the 16th century, a Spaniard named Francisco de Orellana said he had battle with the tribe lead by female warriors near the river. Amazons in Greek mythology are female warriors too, and hence the name of the river. Surprising, isn't it?
