ショーペンハウアーは「個人の運命における見かけ上の意図について」という素晴らしいエッセイの中で、高齢になって自分の人生を振り返ると、まるで小説家が書いたかのように、一貫した秩序と計画があったように思えることがある、と指摘しています。
起こったときには偶然で大したことではないと思われた出来事が、一貫した筋書きを構成する上で欠かせない要素であったことが判明します。では、その筋書きを書いたのは誰でしょうか。ショーペンハウアーは、夢が意識が気づいていない自分の一面によって構成されているように、人生全体も自分の中の意志によって構成されていると示唆しています。
そして、偶然に出会った人々があなたの人生を構成する主役になったように、あなたも知らないうちに代理人として働き、他人の人生に意味を与えているでしょう。
すべてが一つの大きな交響曲のように連動し、すべてが無意識のうちに他のすべてを構成しています。そしてショーペンハウアーは、私たちの人生は、一人の夢想家が描いた一つの偉大な夢の特徴であり、その夢の中ですべての登場人物も夢を見ているかのようであると結論づけています。つまり、すべてのものは他のすべてのものとつながり、自然界の普遍的な意志である一つの生命への意志によって動かされているのです。

Midwives of the Soul
In his splendid essay called “On an Apparent Intention in the Fate of the Individual,” Schopenhauer points out that when you reach an advanced age and look back over your lifetime, it can seem to have had a consistent order and plan, as though composed by some novelist.
Events that when they occurred had seemed accidental and of little moment turn out to have been indispensable factors in the composition of a consistent plot. So who composed that plot? Schopenhauer suggests that just as your dreams are composed by an aspect of yourself of which your consciousness is unaware, so, too, your whole life is composed by the will within you.
And just as people whom you will have met apparently by mere chance became leading agents in the structuring of your life, so, too, will you have served unknowingly as an agent, giving meaning to the lives of others.
The whole thing gears together like one big symphony, with everything unconsciously structuring everything else. And Schopenhauer concludes that it is as though our lives were the features of the one great dream of a single dreamer in which all the dream characters dream, too; so that everything links to everything else, moved by the one will to life which is the universal will in nature.
