今日は、台湾で愛された日本人「八田與一先生」のお話しをブログ上で呟きますね。
英語教材の中からの抜粋、そして、アニメーション映画『パッテンライ!!～南の島の水ものがたり～』、キャッチコピーは、「夢をあきらめるな
」。以下、英語と日本語で。
Hatta was an engineer born in kanazawa, Ishikawa in 1886. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1910, he decided to become a hydraulic engineer. He went to Taiwan and joined the Seat of Governor-General of Taiwan and served as a technician of the government.
The first basic infrastracture project was under way in Taiwan, and Hatta was seen as an ambitious and capable engineer. He proposed the construction of the Chianan Canal and
Wusanto Reservoir to help control flooding and develop farmland, and he was chosen to design and implement the enormous project.
What made Youichi Hatta a hero never forgotten in Taiwan was the way he did his job.
Other supervisors told workers that if they wanted to avoid dangerous situations, they could quit. But Hatta led the way into dangerous situations when there was no other way.
He treated every local worker equally, no matter how low his social class. ｗhen a worker was killed on the job, he treated it as a personal tragedy and mourned with the family.
He also took the unusual measure of insisting that construction workers lived with their families in order to do their best work. This resulted in the development of a town for the workers and their families. Over 2,000 people lived in a town near the canal and reservoir project. In addition to housing, there were public bath services, grocery stores, places for entertainment and schools for the children of the workers.
When the dam was completed in 1931, the workers and local people constructed a statue
of Youichi Hatta on the banks of the reservoir to show their appreciation.
During world war Ⅱ, the government planned to take the statue down and use it as metal to make weapons, but before that, the statue suddenly disappeared. After the war, the government decided that it was treason to show affinity for Japan and the Japanese.
Almost everything built when Japan ruled the country was torn down.
However, when relationships between the two countries warmed, the statue had been carefully hidden in a warehouse by those who knew and appreciated Hatta, despite the fact that this secret could have cost them their lives.
Ever since the restoration of the statue, a celebration has been hosted every year on the
8th of May.
During world war Ⅱ, Hatta was traveling to the Philippines to do research for a possible irrigation project there when the ship he was on was attacked by an American submarine.
The date was May 8, 1942.
Three years after his death, on September 1, 1945.
His wife could no longer bear living alone and jumped into the Wusanto Reservoir, one of the dams created by her husband.
The suicide note she left said, "I am following my beloved"
八田與一先生（1868年2月21日-1942年5月8日）は、日本の水利技術者で、日本統治時代の台湾で、農業水利事業に大きく貢献なされました。
石川県金沢市の出身。1910年東京帝国大学工学部土木科を卒業後、台湾総督府内務局土木課の技手として就職されました。
当時インフラ建設のまっただなかの台湾で、水利工事を成功させたり、水利技術者としておおいに腕をふるわれました。特に1920年から1930年まで、その完成に至るまで工事を指揮した烏山頭ダム、及び水路を嘉南平野一帯にはりめぐした嘉南大圳（かなんたいしゅう）は、その偉業を称えられています。
日本よりも、実際に業績をあげた台湾で評価され、今でも愛され続けている先生は、現地で従事した工事現場で、土木作業員の人々を平等に扱い、労働者が勤務中に死んだときは、それを自分に起こった悲劇として、労働者の家族とともに嘆きました。 また、現場工事において、他に方法がなかったとき、危険な現場にも先頭に立って進んでいきました。
そして、建設労働者に最高の仕事をしてもらうため、労働者が家族と住めるよう要求する異例の措置をとり、結果として、労働者とその家族が住む町の開発をもたらしました。
そして、2,000人以上の人々が、運河とダム建設に近い町に住み、住宅や公衆浴場サービス、食料品店、娯楽施設、子供たちの学校もあったのです。
八田先生は、特別勇敢なことをしたからではなく、先生のもとで働く人たちに見せた思いやり、その並外れた心配りにより、台湾の方々に英雄視されているようです。
最後に、太平洋戦争中の1942年（昭和17年）5月8日、陸軍の命令でフィリピンの綿花灌漑調査のため大洋丸で五島列島付近を航行中、アメリカ海軍潜水艦グレナディアーの雷撃に遭い撃沈され、先生も死亡されました。
太平洋戦争終了後の、1945年9月1日、妻の外代樹（とよき）様は一人で生きていくことに耐えられず、亡夫が造った烏山頭ダムに身を投げられました。
奥様の残した遺書には、次のように綴られていました。
『私は最愛の人の後を追います』と・・・・・・・
この方々の生き様は、人生は、この太陽系第三惑星で語られる、『愛』というものなのでしょうか・・・・・
