Grandpa’s old tale お爺ちゃんの昔話7

Those bad brothers behaved as the lords of the country but the people knew how they took over Yuriwaka’s position. 

Since the brothers never considered people’s happiness, the people missed Yuriwaka very much.

One day, they were holding an archery competition and many people were invited from all over the country to participate in and competed in skill. 

その悪い兄弟は領主のように振る舞っていましたが人々は彼らがどのようにしてその地位に付いたのかを知っていました。そしてその兄弟は全く人々の幸せを顧みなかったので人々は百合若を恋しく思いました。

ある日、弓の競技会が開かれ多くの競技会参加者が国中から招かれました。

At the final match to decide a champion, the bad brothers asked the audiences, “Are there anyone who want to challenge?”

Then one man in rags with long hair and beard stood up and said, “Let me try!”

優勝を決める決勝の試合を前にその兄弟は観衆に言いました「誰かチャレンジしたい者は居らぬか？」すると1人のボロを纏った髪と髭が伸び放題の男が立ち上がって言いました「私にやらせろ！」

Midorimaru was flying very hard but the rice balls were too heavy to fly such a long distance so Midorimaru got exhausted and fell into the sea.

緑丸は一生懸命に飛びましたがそんなに遠い距離を飛ぶにはおにぎりが重過ぎて力尽きて海に落ちてしましました。

Midorimaru’s body was floating to the beach of the island where Yuriwaka was.

Yuriwaka was very surprised to see Midorimaru and shouted’ “Oh, Midorimaru! Wake up!”. 

But Midorimaru just responded weakly, “Pie! Pie!”. That was his finial voice.

Yuriwaka mourned the death of his beloved Midorimaru.

緑丸の身体は百合若のいた島の浜辺に流れつきました。百合若は緑丸を見て大変驚いて叫びました「おー緑丸！目を覚ませ！」しかし緑丸はただ力なく「ピイー、ピイー」と応えただけだった。それが最期の声でした。百合若は彼の愛おしい緑丸の死を大変悲しみました。

Yuriwaka hoped to let his wife know he was safe in the island.
He wrote a message on a leaf with a piece of branch, “I was betrayed by that brothers but I am alive here and I will come back to your place making a raft.” And he tied it to Midorimaru’s leg. Midorimaru flew back to Yuriwaka’s wife. His wife was very happy reading his massage.
百合若は妻に彼がこの島で無事でいる事を知らせたかったので木の葉の上に小枝を使って「私はあの兄弟に裏切られたが、ここで無事だ、なんとか筏を作って帰るつもりだ」と書いて緑丸の脚に括り付けました。緑丸は百合若の妻の元に飛んで行きました。彼の妻はそのメッセージを読んで大変喜びました。

She wrote a letter to tell that the bad brothers behaved as if they had been the lords of the country.
She said to Midorimaru, “I am sorry to ask you to carry this letter and a rice ball to Yuriwaka”, and tied them to Midorimaru’s leg and released it.

彼女はその悪い兄弟はまるで領主のように振る舞っていることなどを伝えるために手紙を書きました。
彼女は緑丸に「大変悪いですがあなたにこの手紙とおにぎりを百合若に届けて欲しい」と頼みました。そしてそれらを緑丸の脚に括り付けて放しました(つづく)
