今日は久しぶりの雨となった。数日前、庭の雑草に除草剤を撒いたが、昨日までに殆どが枯れたようである。明日はゴミ袋に詰めて廃棄しなければならない。
外山滋比古氏の「グライダー効果」については著書「知的創造のヒント」（1977年）でも取り上げられているが、「東大・京大で1番読まれた本」として知られる「思考の整理学」（1983年）では、「グライダー人間」と「飛行機人間」を対比させて、現在の学校教育の問題点についても言及している。
以下の東北大の英作文の問題は、まさにこの「グライダー人間」と「飛行機人間」を正面から取り扱っている。全文を訳そうとすると、主語を何にすべきか迷うところも多かった。しかし、英訳対象箇所についてはさほど難しくはなかったのではないか。
（問題）
次の文章を読み、下線部(A)、(B)を英語に訳しなさい。
人間には、グライダー能力と飛行機能力とがある。(A)受動的に知識を得るのが前者、自分でものごとを発明、発見するのが後者である。両者はひとりの人間の中に同居している。グライダー能力をまったく欠いていては、基本的知識すら習得できない。何も知らないで、独力で飛ぼうとすれば、どんな事故になるかわからない。
しかし、現実には、グライダー能力が圧倒的で、飛行機能力はまるでなし、という“優秀な”人間がたくさんいることもたしかで、しかも、そういう人も“翔べる”という評価を受けているのである。
学校はグライダー人間をつくるには適しているが、飛行機人間を育てる努力はほんのすこししかしていない。

指導者がいて、目標がはっきりしているところではグライダー能力が高く評価されるけれども、新しい文化の創造には飛行機能力が不可欠である。それを学校教育はむしろ抑圧してきた。急にそれをのばそうとすれば、さまざまな困難がともなう。
他方、現代は情報の社会である。グライダー人間をすっかりやめてしまうわけにも行かない。それなら、グライダーにエンジンを搭載するにはどうしたらいいのか。学校も社会もそれを考える必要がある。

(B)グライダー専業では安心していられないのは、コンピューターという飛び抜けて優秀なグライダー能力のもち主があらわれたからである。自分で翔べない人間はコンピューターに仕事をうばわれる。

Human beings have glider ability and airplane ability. (A) The former is to passively acquire knowledge, and the latter is to invent and discover things by themselves. These two abilities live together in one person at the same time. If a person lacks the glider ability at all, he will not be able to acquire even basic knowledge. So, if he doesn’t know anything at all and tries to fly all by himself, no one knows what kind of accident may happen.
However, actually, it is true that there are many “excellent“ people who have overwhelmingly strong glider ability and no airplane ability, and that such people are also evaluated as “flyable.”
Schools are suitable for cultivating glider people, but they make just a little effort to develop airplane people.

In the field where there is a leader and a definite goal, the glider ability is highly valued, however, the airplane ability is indispensable for creating a new culture. As a matter of fact, school education has suppressed this airplane ability. If they try to develop it suddenly, they will face various difficulties.
On the other hand, as today is an information-oriented society, they can’t just give up cultivating glider people entirely. If it is so, how do we install an engine on a glider? Schools and the society need to think about this matter.

(B) Why do we feel uneasy to be a full-time glider person? It is because the computer, which has outstandingly high-performing glider ability, has appeared. If a person can’t fly by himself, his job will be robbed of by the computer.
