「…にもかかわらず」という表現はビジネス文書でよく見かけるが「かかわる」には「係る」、「関る」、「拘る」など、複数の漢字があり、意味も複数あるため注意が必要である。
「…にもかかわらず」は、本来「前文の内容を受け、それに反対の内容を下に続ける。それなのに。…であるのに。」（広辞苑）の意味だが、和英辞典には「…であるのに」と「…に関係なく」の２通りの訳語・例文が記載されている（新和英中辞典）。恐らく前者は、漢字「拘らず」の本来の意味で、後者は漢字「係らず・関らず」から派生したものと思われるが、実際の漢字の使い方は必ずしもそうなってはいないようである。
本Articleではこの『…にもかかわらず』を表す英語表現に焦点をあて、前記の２つの意味『…であるのに（…したのに）』と『…に関係なく（…を問わず）』ごとに例文を記載し、若干の考察を行う。
1. 『…であるのに（…したのに）』の意味の英語表現
a) The branch manager attended the meeting in spite of his illness.
= The branch manager attended the meeting in spite of the fact that he was ill.
「支店長は、病気を押して会議に出席した」
b) They promoted the plan notwithstanding (= despite) the lack of funds.
= They promoted the plan despite the fact that they were running short of funds.
「資金が不足していたのに彼らはその計画を推進した」
c) He was unable to get out of his difficulties for all (= with all) his abundant experience.
= He was unable to get out of his difficulties although he had abundant experience.
「彼には豊富な経験があったが、その苦境を脱することができなかった」
d) They sailed out of port in the teeth of (= in the face of) a storm.
「彼らは嵐をものともせず出航した」
e) No matter how severe the competition may be, our company shall always pursue fair business practices, and shall not engage in any bribery and corruption as well as cartel.
「いかに競争が厳しかろうとも、当社は常に公正な事業活動を追求するものとし、カルテルはもちろんのこと贈賄、汚職などに一切与(くみ)しないものとする」
f) You may think the story strange, but it is nevertheless (= nonetheless) true.
「あなたは不思議に思うかもしれないが、それでもその話は真実だ」
g) The strategy seemed to be correct, but yet (= still) it did not convince me.
「その戦略は正しいように見えたが、それでもやはり私は納得できなかった」
2. 『…に関係なく（…を問わず）』の意味の英語表現
h) The company prepared in-house institutions so that the employees could participate in childcare regardless of gender.
「その会社は、従業員が性別を問わず育児に参加できるように社内制度を整備した」
i) The Personnel Affairs Department decided to employ competent human resources irrespective of their years of experience.
「人事部は、経験年数に関係なく有能な人材を採用することを決定した」
j) Updates to the virus definition file and the scan engine are performed independently of this configuration.
「ウイルス定義ファイルとスキャンエンジンへのアップデートは、本設定に関係なく実行されます」
k) This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Kingdom of Sweden without reference to its conflicts of laws principles.
「本契約は、抵触法の原則に拘わらず、スウェーデン王国の法律に準拠し、それに従って解釈されるものとする」
l) This event will be held whether it rains or not.
= This event will be held rain or shine (wet or fine).
「本イベントは晴雨にかかわらず開催します」
3. 若干の考察
(1) 『…であるのに（…したのに）』型は前置詞・接続詞の形式が多く、『…に関係なく（…を問わず）』型は成句（イディオム）・慣用句の形式が多いようである。
(2) 『…であるのに（…したのに）』型のnevertheless (nonetheless)の代わりにhowever, yet, stillを使うことができるnevertheless (nonetheless)は文語的、howeverは口語的、またyet, stillはhoweverより意味が強くなる。
(3) 『…に関係なく（…を問わず）』型では、上記以外にもapart from, without regard to, without respect toなどが使用できる。
(4) 文書内に「…にもかかわらず」という日本語がでてきたら、まずは文脈から『…であるのに（…したのに）』型か、『…に関係なく（…を問わず）』型かを見極め、その文書の文体に応じた訳語（構文）を選定する必要がある。
