At, for, in等の前置詞は、通常は名詞・代名詞の前に置かれ、それらが意味の上で文の他の部分とどんな関係にあるかを示す。2語（because of等）や3語以上（in addition to等）になる場合もあり、その場合は前置詞句（または群前置詞）と呼ばれる。
また「前置詞＋前置詞（句）」で1つの前置詞の役割を果たす場合は、二重前置詞と呼ばれ、from among（…の中から）, from in front of（…の前から）, till after（…の後まで）などがある。
前置詞は1語のもので約90個、前置詞句を加えると約130個あるが、本Articleでは、前置詞（1語のもの）のうち古風なもの、またあまり見掛けないものに焦点をあてその使用例を列挙する。
