昨今「あざとい」という日本語をしばしば耳にするようになった。流行語が形成されるメカニズムはよくわからない。
「あざとい」を辞書で引くと、
①思慮が浅い。小利口である。
②押しが強くて、やり方が露骨で抜け目がない。
とあり、流行っているのは②の意味で、特に女性に対して使われているようである。勿論良い意味ではなく、漢字（当て字）では「小聡明い」とも書くようである。
「抜け目がない」と聞いてまず浮かぶ訳語はshrewdだがsmartやcleverも使えるようである。そういう意味ではこれらの語も安易には使えない。
Shrewd:
A shrewd person is able to understand and judge a situation quickly and to use this understanding to their own advantage.
「あざとい人とは、ある状況を即座に理解・判断して、その理解・判断した内容を自らが有利になるように使うことができる人をいう」
It was shrewd of the female salesperson to guess what the old couple really wanted.
= The female salesperson had the shrewdness to guess what the old couple really wanted.
「その女性販売員は、あざとくもその老夫婦が実のところ何を望んでいるのかを察した」
