新聞を読んでいると今でも未知の熟語に出会う。今回は「弥縫（びほう）」という語である。これは東芝の第3四半期の決算発表に使用されていた。
監査意見「不表明」のまま提出したことを表現したもので、急場しのぎの「弥縫策」としか言いようがないと批判していた。

「弥縫」とは「補い合わせること。失敗・欠点などを一時的に取り繕うこと。」（広辞苑）の意味である。60年近く生きてきて初めて知った語であった。
「弥縫」は和英辞典にも見出しがあり訳語には “patching up”, “temporizing”, “makeshift” 等が記載されていた。このうち “makeshift” のみ使用したことがあった。「間に合わせの」という意味の形容詞としてであった。
以下に定義・例文を記載しておく。
Makeshift:
Makeshift things are temporary and usually of poor quality, but they are used because there is nothing better available.
「間に合わせ品とは一時的なもので普通は品質が悪く、より良いものが入手できないために使用される。」
Temporize:
If you say that someone is temporizing, you mean that they keep doing unimportant things in order to delay something important such as making a decision or stating their real opinion.
「何かを決定する、または何かについて真の意見を表明する等重要なことの実施を遅らせる（時間稼ぎをする）ために、重要でないことを実施し続けること」
The government evacuated people from the disaster site to a makeshift shelter.
「政府は人々を災害現場から仮設避難所へ避難させた。」
The company disclosed the financial statement without a clean opinion as a temporizing measure.
「その会社は弥縫策として適正意見が付かない決算報告書を開示した。」
