11月に入り急に寒くなった。今年も秋は短そうである。

技術文書では「回転する」という語がよく出てくるが、この場合に用いる動詞 “revolve” と “rotate” について以前からしっかりと調べたことが無かった。今回この2つの動詞を比較してみる。
まずは英英辞典の定義から確認する。
Revolve:
1) If you say that one thing revolves around another thing, you mean that the second thing is the main feature or focus of the first thing.
「ある物がもう一つの物を主体または焦点として動くこと」
2) If a discussion revolves around a particular topic, it is mainly about the topic.
「議論がある特定の話題を中心に展開されること」
3) if one object revolves around another object, the first object turns in a circle around the second object.
「ある物体がもう一つの物体の周りを円形に回ること（公転・自転）」
4) When something revolves or when you revolve it, it moves or turns in a circle around a central point or line.
「ある物が、または人がある物を中心点または中心線の周りを円形に回る（回す）こと」

Rotate:
1) When something rotates or when you rotate it, it turns with a circular movement.
「ある物が円運動で回る、または人がある物を円運動で回すこと（自転・公転）」
2) If people or things rotate, or if someone rotate them, they take it in turns to do a particular job or serve a particular purpose.
「人や物事が、ある特定の仕事または特定の目的を代わる代わる行う（果たす）こと」

以下に例文を記載する。
The earth revolves around (round) the sun.
= The earth rotates around (round) the sun.
「地球は太陽の周りを公転する」
The earth revolves on its axis.
= The earth rotates on its axis.
「地球は地軸を中心に自転する」
His whole life revolves around (about) his work.
「彼の全生活は仕事中心に動いている」
The conversation revolved around that terrible traffic accident.
「会話はあの悲惨な交通事故を中心に展開した」
The seasons rotate.
「季節はめぐりくる」
The workers rotate between the day and night shifts.
「労働者は昼と夜の2交替制で働いている」

“Revolve” も “rotate” ともに公転にも自転にも使える（前置詞に注意）が、名詞で「公転」、「自転」という場合はそれぞれ “revolution”, “rotation” とする方が一般的なようである。
