“Those”という語は、最初“that”の複数形として“these”と一緒に覚え、“those who”で「人々」を表すことを知り、“those days”で「当時」というやや情緒的な意味も知った。
“Those Were the Days”
は日本語タイトル「悲しき天使」という1968年のメアリー・ホプキンの曲で、私がこの曲を知ったのはヒットしてから10年以上経った頃だった。
“Those”はそんな先入観に満ちた語であったが、翻訳の仕事をするようになって初めてその本来の機能（便利さ）知ったように思う。今回はこの“those”を取り上げる。

Those:
1) You use those to refer to people or things which have already been mentioned. (Those is also a pronoun.)
「自分が既に述べた人々や物事に言及する場合に“those”を使う。（“Those”は代名詞としても使われる。）」
2) You use those when you are referring to people or things that are a distance away from you in position or time, especially when you indicate or point to them. (Those is also a pronoun.)

3) You use those to refer to someone or something when you are going to give details or information about them.

4) You use those to introduce more information about something already mentioned, instead of repeating the noun which refers to it.
「自分が既に述べた物事について更なる情報を紹介する場合に、その物事を表す名詞を繰り返して使う代わりに“those”を使う。」
5) You use those to mean ‘people’.
「『人々』の意味で“those”を使う。」
6) You use those when you refer to things that you expect the person you are talking to to know about or when you are checking that you are both thinking of the same people or things.
「自分の話し相手が知っているだろうと期待する物事に言及する場合、または自分と話し相手がともに同じ人々や物事を考えていることを確認する場合に“those”を使う。」
