ビジネス英語でしばしば使われる“intend”という動詞だが、実は主語が人か物かで意味が異なるなど一筋縄ではいかない語である。汎用的な動詞だけに、今回用法を再確認し正しく使えるようにしておきたい。

動詞“intend”の定義を英英辞典で再確認する。
Intend:
1) If you intend to do something, you have decided or planned to do it.
「ある事をしようと決めること、または計画すること。」
2) If something is intended for a particular purpose, it has been planned to fulfill that purpose. If something is intended for a particular person, is has been planned to be used by that person or to affect them in some way.
「ある物が特定の目的を果たすために計画されていること。ある物が特定の人により使われる、または何らかの方法で特定の人に影響を及ぼすように計画されていること。」
3) If you intend a particular idea or feeling in something that you say or do, you want to express it or want it to be understood.
「人が、ある物の中に特定の考えや気持ちを表現したいと望むこと、または特定の考えや気持ちを理解してほしいと望むこと。」

以下、例文を挙げておく。
He intends his room to be cleaned.
= He intends that his room (shall [should]) be cleaned.
「彼は部屋を掃除する（させる）つもりだ。」
I intended to have gone.
「行くつもりだったが行けなかった。」
I intended to be a doctor.
「私は医者になるつもりだった（実際になれたかどうかは不明）。」
This book was intended for use in the public school.
「この本は公立学校の教材用に書かれた。」
This portrait is intended for you.
「この肖像画は君を描いたつもりなんだ。」
It was intended as a joke.
「それは冗談のつもりだった。」

人が主語なら“intend to do”で「･･･するつもり」、物が主語なら“be intended for”で「･･･の目的で、･･･向けに」ととりあえずまとめておくことにする。

以下は本題から逸れるが･･･。“Intend”の名詞形は普通は“intention”だが“intent”というやや堅い語がある。名詞としては「意思、意志、決意、故意」の意味を持つ。
この“intent”は形容詞では「…に集中した、…に没頭した」という意味を持ち“be intent on (…ing)”という形で使われる。
