先日「迅速化する」という意味の動詞”expedite”とその名詞形”expedition”について触れたが、この”expedite”という語は私にとってはやや使いにくい動詞である。
Expedite (= speed up)
If you expedite something, you cause it to be done more quickly.
「何かをもっと素早くさせるようにすること」
A phone call to the financial department may help expedite the payment.
「経理部に電話すれば、より早く支払ってもらえるかもしれません」

動詞”expedite”には形容詞が２つあり、それは”expedient”と”expeditious”である。意味は以下の通り。
Expedient:
If it is expedient to do something, it is useful or convenient to do it, even though it may not be morally right.
「たとえ道徳的に正しくはなくても、そうすることが有益な、または便利なさま」
Expeditious:
Expeditious means quick and efficient.
「素早くて能率的なさま」
これらの形容詞の名詞形が”expedience (expediency)”と”expeditiousness”である。
Expedience (= expediency): 「便宜、好都合、方便、便宜主義」
Expeditiousness: 「迅速さ、素早くて効率的なこと」
これら２つの名詞と、”expedite”のもう一つの名詞形”expedition”は全く別の意味である。
Expedition:
1) An expedition is an organized journey that is made for a particular purpose such as exploration.
「探検（踏査・探査）など特定の目的のために行われる組織だった旅行」
2) You can refer to a group of people who are going on an expedition as an expedition.
「探検（踏査・探査）などの旅行を行う人の団体を指すこともできる」
3) An expedition is a short journey or trip that you make for pleasure.
「楽しみのためにする短い旅行または旅（外出）」

英英辞典の定義の通り、名詞”expedition”は”exploration”に近いようである。動詞”expedite”の本来の意味は何処に消えてしまったのか・・・？
たぶんこれが”expedite”が使いにくい理由である。
