接頭辞”with-“には以下のサイトによると「後方へ、離れて、反対に」という意味があるらしい。

このwith-型の動詞の数は非常に少なくその代表的なものはwithdraw, withhold, withstandである。今回はそのうち最も使う機会が少ない（と思う）withdrawを取り上げる。

Withdraw:
1) If you withdraw something from a place, you remove it or take it away.
「ある物をある場所から移動（除去）すること」
2) When groups of people such as troops withdraw or when someone withdraws them, they leave the place where they are fighting or where they are based and return nearer home.
「軍隊などの一群の人々が自ら、またはある人がそれら一群の人々を、その戦っている場所、または基盤とする場所から撤退し（撤退させ）自国（地元）近くに引き返す（引き返させる）こと」
3) If you withdraw money from a bank account, you take it out of that account.
「銀行口座からお金を引き出すこと」
4) If you withdraw to anther room, you go to there.
「別の部屋へ入る（退く）こと」
5) If you withdraw from an activity or organization, you stop taking part in it.
「ある活動または組織に参加することを止めること」
6) If you withdraw a remark or statement that you have made, you say that you want people to ignore it.
「自分が述べた感想（意見）や声明（陳述）を、人が無視するように望む（撤回する）こと」

3)の意味では確かに”withdraw”が適語である。1)は以前ブログに書いた”produce”でもよい。2)は私は”retreat”を使う。その他は敢えて”withdraw”を使う必要はない。
なお”withdraw into”には「引きこもる」という意味もある。
