ともにあまり使わない単語”feast”と”famine”。実はこれら2つの単語は互いに「反意語」（”antonym”）である。

Famine is a situation in which large numbers of people have little or no food, and many of them die.

この”feast”と”famine”が組み合わさり一つの慣用句を構成する。”Feast or famine”。「ご馳走か極貧か」が転じて「大成功か大失敗か、いちかばちか」の意味になった。
That business seemed to be either feast or famine.
「あのビジネスはいちかばちかのように思われた」
なお、”feast”と”famine”は同じ音で始まり「韻」を踏んでいる。このような押韻法を「頭韻法」（”alliteration”）という。また、この慣用句は本来”feast or fast”（「ご馳走か断食か」）という形だったようである。
