Good evening, I'm Tata.
Today, I want to talk about my allowance situation during my elementary school days.
My family wasn't poor, but we didn't have an allowance system.
The principle was that if I wanted something, I had to find a way to get it myself.
during summer vacations, I would go to the mountains to catch beetles like stag beetles and rhinoceros beetles, and then sell them to children of tourists at a corner of a drive-in (similar to what are now called road stations). I had obtained permission for this, but it was one of my main sources of income.
I also harvested wild vegetables like butterbur sprouts, taranome (angelica tree shoots), and fiddleheads in the mountains and sold them wholesale.
Also, since my family ran a business, I was paid an hourly wage for helping out 250 yen an hour.
When I was in elementary school, It was more than double the allowance my classmates were receiving.
With the money I earned from these ventures, I could buy the things I wanted.
I mainly wanted the latest stationery items such as pencil cases, mechanical pencils, and character-themed pencils and pens.
Even though it was money I earned myself, I could buy anything I wanted.
Looking back, I guess my sense of money started to get skewed from that time.
