NUSA DUA, Indonesia--The president of Myanmar (Burma) has expressed expectations that pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be elected to parliament, suggesting that he won't stand in her way if she wins.
"She must be elected by the people. And if parliament elects her, then she becomes something. And that is according to the wishes of the people," President Thein Sein told media organizations, including The Asahi Shimbun, on Nov. 19.
Thein Sein, 66, who became president in March, gave his first interview a day after Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy decided to take part in by-elections expected around March.
The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate is expected to run in the elections, in which about 50 seats will be contested.
Thein Sein said when he met Suu Kyi for the first time in August in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, he asked her to "set aside (their) differences and work on common ground."

このように、表現の意味を知りたい時は、どれか一つの語を、試しに引いてみると、探していた表現が出てくるものです。
早速、この例文を見てみましょう。
「あなた、道の中に立ってるわよ。」と彼女が言った。そして、「ちょっと、よけて下さいらないかしら。。。。どいてよ！」
という訳で、stand in the way している人は、誰かの前に立ちはだかって邪魔をしていると言う事です。

アウンサンスーチーさんの記事では、大統領がこうおっしゃっています。
「異なった考えは、set aside して、みんなが共通の場で活躍されてください。」
ですから、コリンズの２番の意味が当てはまりますね。
２．信念、原則や気持ちをset aside すると、そういったものには、大した影響はうけなのだと判断したという事になる。
例＞彼は、小さな差異は平和の為に、ちょっと置いておくように言った。
今回のset aside は、「脇にやる」「退ける」という意味でした。
が、しかし、ちょっと気を付けてください。
１番の意味を見ると、このようにあります。
「特別な使用や目的の為に、何かをset aside するということは、それをその使用や目的の為に、使えるように取っておく。」
つまり、set aside する物そのものが、大変重要。
お金や時間を「脇にやる」 のは、「取っておく」という意味。
考え、信念などを「脇にやる」は、「除外する」という意味になります。
