Myanmar president won't squash Suu Kyi's political bid
NUSA DUA, Indonesia--The president of Myanmar (Burma) has expressed expectations that pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be elected to parliament, suggesting that he won't stand in her way if she wins.
"She must be elected by the people. And if parliament elects her, then she becomes something. And that is according to the wishes of the people," President Thein Sein told media organizations, including The Asahi Shimbun, on Nov. 19.
Thein Sein, 66, who became president in March, gave his first interview a day after Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy decided to take part in by-elections expected around March.
The 66-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate is expected to run in the elections, in which about 50 seats will be contested.
Thein Sein said when he met Suu Kyi for the first time in August in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, he asked her to "set aside (their) differences and work on common ground."
