こちらは、曇り空から雨模様ですが、丁度良い気温で快適です。
今日は、色々ある辞書の中から、ふたつの辞書を紹介させて頂いて、
どの辞書を使えば良いかの選択の手助けになれば良いと思います。
辞書に、それぞれ特徴があります。
その辞書の特徴は、辞書を開けてすぐの所に数ページに渡って書いてあります。
電気屋さんへ行くと、電子辞書のコーナーに、よく「○万語搭載！」とか、「プロも使用！」とか表記してありますが、私は、その辞書の特徴を読んで、きちんと書いてくださると、更に売上が伸びるのではないかと思います。
では、まず、artという単語をふたつの辞書で引いてみました。

うわぁ、沢山ありすぎです
大変なので、1番目の意味だけ見てみましょう。
コビルドでは、「絵画や彫刻など」とあり、
ＯＥＤでは、「技術」
とあります。
この二つの辞書「コビルド」と「ＯＥＤ」は、どういう辞書かというと：
「コビルド」は、現代使われている頻度の高い順に意味が列挙してあります。
そして、「ＯＥＤ」は、その言葉が誕生した古い順に意味が列挙してあります。
「使用頻度の高い順」と「古い順」というのが、これらの辞書の特徴なのです。
私は、仕事では、コビルドは使っても、ＯＥＤは使いません。言葉の誕生ヒストリーを語るのが、
目的ではなく、今使える英語を教える事が私の仕事の目的だからです。
ですから、どんな辞書を使えば良いのか悩んだら、お手持ちの辞書を開いて、
その辞書の特徴を見て頂ければ、きっと、自分の目的にあったものが見つかると思います。
コビルドとＯＥＤを比較したのは、極端な例を見て頂きたいと思ったからですが、OEDは、すっごく高価な辞書で、
ビジネスには不向きです。言語の研究や、語源を知りたいなどを知りたい人に向いていると思います。
コビルドも、あまり安い辞書ではありませんが、こちらは、例文も豊富で、何といっても、現代の使用頻度の高い順に意味が出てくるので、「こんな風にこの言葉は使うのかな？」と悩む事がある人には、持ってこいです。
という訳で、ひとつ、辞書を開いた最初のページを見てみるのも面白いものです。
