Armando,
I just wanted to send you my feedback on Pat.
He’s great. By nature of this year, we are dealing with a lot of complicated, somewhat messy, urgent, critical issues. Pat’s engagement is very high on each one of those issues despite his extensive work load. Thanks to that, I can concentrate on what I should be doing in Japan as the on-site HR head, and I can perform as expected.
I’m leaving and I know I’m not part of Pat’s performance management process, but I wanted you to know how much appreciation I have for Pat since January.
He is my leader role model.
アルマンド (Pat の上司)、
Pat

Wow, what a beautiful and thoughtful note Tamboo San, I truly appreciate the feedback and input as to Pat’s leadership role. I will keep your words in mind as we move into the future. Thank you so much!

Hi, I'm Tamboo.
I'm the head of Human Resources at the Japanese subsidiary of a global manufacturer, which has announced withdrawal from the Japanese market.
I'm sharing stories and lessons learned from my job that may help you in your career and life, as well as that are helping me jump to a new world.
In the last blog post, I suggested that you give positive feedback to other people openly as positive feelings occur to you. And I promised that I would share a recent example of mine at work.
Here you go.
A few weeks ago, I sent an e-mail to Pat’s boss to give my feedback on Pat.
This is the text:
“Armando,
I just wanted to send you my feedback on Pat.
He is my leader role model.”
People in high positions in an organization need to know how their employees are being evaluate by people reporting to them. Feedback from people below helps the people in high positions.
In giving constructive feedbac, you need to be thoughtful for the other person to catch the ball and avoid negative reaction. But when it comes to positive feedback, my view is that giving it openly and timely is easy and effective.
So I did it.
Here is some tips on giving feedback.
It’s called SBI Model.
Situation
Describe the situation.
Behaviors
Describe the behaviors.
Impact
Describe the impact of the behaviors.
The key is to be specific. This model is useful for both positive and constructive feedback.
On the following day, I got a reply back from Armando.
“Wow, what a beautiful and thoughtful note Tamboo San, I truly appreciate the feedback and input as to Pat’s leadership role. I will keep your words in mind as we move into the future. Thank you so much!”
The sender of this e-mail is the head of Human Resources of the company’s Asia Pacific headquarters. I’ve met him only once, and I normally would not communicate with him directly.
Even to someone who is far away, if you communicate your positive feelings straightforwardly, the other person would catch the ball and send it back to you straightforwardly.
It was a happy exchange.
Such an exchange of thoughts and feelings will lead to building trust between the two people.
On top of that, the person who gets a “Like!” from you may give it to someone else.
The waves of “Like!” will expand.
You are the start of the waves.
Armando,
Thank you very much for catching my ball and throwing it back to me!
