食べながら 海鮮から派生された英語イディオムいくつを思いついた。
さ、今日のテーマはこれにしよう
Idioms with sea food
まず、牡蠣oyster /ɔ́istər/です。
前紹介したことがあり とてもいい励ます言葉です⇩
次、アサリ clam /klǽm/です。
① (as) happy as a clam
めちゃ嬉しい、めちゃ幸せ
例文
I'm happy as a clam because everything in my life goes great.
すべてのことは順調だから私はとても嬉しい。
② clam up
口をつぐむ、口を閉(と)ざす、恥ずかしいあるいは話題を話したくない状態、黙秘(もくひ)する
例文
She just clammed up and wouldn't talk about whatever is troubling her.
彼女はただ黙ったまま自分の悩みを全く話したくなかった。
ー Have you talked to the boss about the layoff ?
ー He just clams up and won't say a word.
ー 上司と一時解雇について話したの?
ー 彼はただ黙って何も言わなかった。
He just clams up if you ask him about his childhood.
彼に子供頃のことを尋ねると彼は口をつぐむ。
最後、一番多いイディオムの由来ーー
魚fish です 🐠🐟🐡🎣🦈
① xx is not the only fish in the sea.
あるいは There are plenty fish in the sea.
もちろん、恋愛以外の場合も使えます(他の機会や仕事や友達など。) 他の選択肢はいくらでもあるっていう表現です。
例文
ー I know you're sad because you and your boyfriend broke up, but he's not the only fish in the sea.
ー You're right. There are plenty more fish in the sea.
ー あなたは彼と別れて悲しいと分かってるけど彼は唯一の恋人ではないよ。
ー その通り。他の選択肢はいっぱいある。
I'm pretty disappointed that I didn't get the job, but I'm reminding myself it's not the only fish in the sea.
あの仕事を手に入れなかってがっかりしてるけど唯一の選択肢ではないと自分に言い聞かせる。
② a fish out of water
水から上げられた魚 → 陸に上がった河童のように；場違いで；居心地の悪い状況におかれた人のこと
例文
I don't have friends there . I feel like a fish out of water.
あそこで友達がいないから、場違いような感じがある。
She was feeling like a fish out of water at that party.
彼女はあのパーティで自分が場違いな気がしてた。
③ a dead fish in bed
