今週末はバレンタインですね！
日本とアメリカは逆で、アメリカでは男性が女性に愛をささげるというのを
ご存知でしたか？
今回は、日本ではあまり知られていないバレンタインの歴史について
見ていきたいと思います。

Today I'd like to tell you about the American holiday called “Valentine's Day.”
There seems to be two theories where this holiday came from.
The first involves a holiday for the Roman Goddess Juno.
She was the Goddess of women and marriage.
They held a festival starting on Feb 15th.
At that time, the lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate.
But during this festival there was a custom called name drawing.
The names of the girls were written on pieces of paper and put into jars.
Each young man would draw a girl's name and would then be that girl's partner
for the rest of the festival.
Naturally, sometimes the two might continue their relationship, fall in love,
and even marry.
今日は、アメリカの祝日「バレンタインデー」についてお話したいと思います。
この祝日がどうやって始まったか、２つ説があるようです。
最初の説は、ローマのユノ女神に関連するものです。
彼女は女性と結婚の神でした。
彼らは、2月15日から始まる祭りを催していました。
その当時、若い男女の生活は厳しく分離されていました。
しかしこの祭りの間は、「名前抽選会」と呼ばれる習慣がありました。
女の子の名前が紙片に書かれて、ビンに入れられるのです。
若い男性一人一人が女の子の名前を引いて、祭りの間、女の子の
パートナーになるのです。
自然と、時々カップルは関係を継続したり、恋に落ちたり、
結婚さえもしてしまうこともありました。

The second theory involves the rule of Emperor Claudius II.
He was called Claudius the Cruel, and he led many bloody and unpopular
military campaigns.
Because of that, he was having trouble getting soldiers to join his army.
He believed the reason was that men did not want to leave their loves or families.
As a result, he cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome.
Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome at that time, and he and Saint Marius
began to secretly marry couples.
Claudius found out and arrested St.Valentine and ordered him to be executed.
In about the year 270 he was executed, on Feb 14th.
It is said that he may have fallen in love with the jailer's daughter, and
upon his death, he had written her a letter and signed it “From your Valentine.”
第二の説は、クラウディウス天皇二世のルールに関連するものです。
彼は、「暴君クラウディウス」と呼ばれていました。
彼は多くの血なまぐさく、不評の軍の戦略を実行に移しました。
そのため、彼は軍隊に兵隊を集めるのに苦慮していました。
彼は、原因は男たちが恋人や家族から離れたがらないからだと思いました。
結果として、彼はローマでのすべての結婚と婚姻を取りやめました。
聖バレンタインは、当時、ローマで牧師でした。彼と聖マリウスは秘密裏に
カップルの結婚を執り行い始めました。

In America, Esther Howland was the first person credited with sending Valentine's cards.
As a teenager, she received one from England, in 1847.
It was decorated with lace and patterns of flowers, which had been pasted on.
Her father was a stationary store owner, and after he saw how enthusiastically Esther
and her friends reacted to the card, he decided to import some and sell them in his store.
She designed ten different cards, then her brother, who was a salesman for the store,
went out and came back with $5,000 worth of orders.
アメリカでは、エスター・ハウランドが最初にバレンタインタインカードを送り始めたと
言われています。ティーンネイジャーのとき、1847年にイギリスよりバレンタインカードを
もらったといわれています。
カードは貼られたレースや花柄で飾られていました。
彼女のお父さんは文房具店の店主で、エスターと彼女の友達がカードに熱狂的に反応
したのを見て、カードを輸入して店で売ることを決めたのです。
彼女は10通りの異なったカードをデザインし、そして彼女の兄が店のセールスマンだったので
売りに行くと、$5,000分の注文が取れたのです。

By 1949 Esther set up her business in a room of the family home, working
with several of her friends.
They hand-made each card, and each person was assigned a specific task in the process.
Eventually, the Howland business was bought by a large corporation and the hand-made cards
began to be mass-produced by machines. Now, Valentine's Day cards are sent and received by
thousands of people every year.
In addition, chocolates, flowers, candy or jewelry are often given as gifts to women.
Because red is considered the color of love, women often wear red on that day,
especially if out on a date.
エスターは1949年までに、自宅の一室で友人の何人かとビジネスを始めました。
彼女らは一枚一枚手作りで、1人1人が工程を割り当てられていました。
やがて、ビジネスは大きい会社に買収され、手作りのカードは機械での大量生産に切り替わりました。
現在では、バレンタインカードは毎年毎年、何千人もの人にやり取りされています。
加えて、チョコレート、花束、キャンディや宝石などが女性に送られます。
赤は愛の色と考えられているので、女性は特に、デートにおいてはしばしば赤の服を着ます。
