昔の海外ドラマを見ていたら出てきた詩の一節。
調べてみたら、W.H.オーデンという人の"The More Loving One"という詩でした。20世紀最大の詩人の一人と言われているようですね。

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.
How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.
冒頭に抜き出したところだけを見ると、恋愛ドラマで使われていた一節ということもあり、恋愛している相手との関係において、同じだけの愛情をお互いに持つことが不可能なら、自分のほうがより愛情をもっている方でいたい・・・という意味にも取れます。
よく「より愛されている方が幸せ」というような説もありますが、本当のところはどうなのでしょうか？見返りを求めずに与えるような愛情を持てるということは、それ自体とても貴重であり、素晴らしいことなのでは・・・という気もします。
ちなみに、こちらのサイトで日本語の訳がつけられています。（この詩の邦題が「今よりもっと愛する」となっていますが、これは違うんじゃないかなぁ・・・・と思いますが・・・）
