週末に温泉旅行を考えているHelenaに、Koichiは彼の祖父母が経営しているホテルを紹介します。

 

Helena: Koichi、週末の3連休のために、私たちは、どこの温泉リゾートを選ぶべきかしら。Koichi, which hot-spring resort should we choose for the three-day weekend?

 

Koichi: 僕の祖父母が静岡の山に中で、すてきで、こぢんまりしたホテルを経営しているんだ。My grandparents run a great little hotel in the mountains of Shizuoka.

 

Helena: そこのwebページはあるの?Is there a web page for it?

 

Koichi: うん。どれどれ。あ~、ここにあるよ。それは、古いwebページだけどね。Yes. Let me see. Ah, here it is. It’s an old web page, though.

 

Helena: これらの写真からは、ちょっと古くてみすぼらしく見えるわね。From these photos, the place looks kind of shabby.

 

Koichi: 見た目で中身を判断しちゃいけないよ。そこの温泉は第一級だし、食事も最高なのさ。Don’t judge a book by its cover. The hot spring there is first-class and the food is exquisite.

 

Helena: 確かなの?Are you sure?

 

Koichi: 僕を信じてよ。素晴らしいんだから。Trust me. It’s awesome.

Sensei: So, can you paraphrase the phrase "go by the back road"?

Chris: Sure. You could say, "take the back road".

Roza: Or "use the back road".

 

We should play by the rules.

 

Sensei: So can you paraphrase this, too?

Chris: I guess the only way, I think, we could paraphrase is by saying "following the rules".

 

I go to school by bicycle.

Sensei: What does this phrase exactly mean?

Chris: Well, You can take it literally. You know, the face is basically flat and the nose sticks out of it just a little bit. So you won by just a very tiny margin. And this expression is used for horse racing, by the way. 

 

Sensei: Hm, by the way. I don't wanna be known by you.

Chris: Why's that?

Sensei: I mean you are horrible.

Roza: Well, I don't think we want to be known by Onishi Sensei.

Chris: I see. You mean a man is known by the company he keeps, right? That's why I deny all knowlege of you, guys.

Roza: We? What do you mean "you, guys"?

Smith: It's a collection of letters, written by the classical music composers, Brahms and Clara Schumann, They wrote hundreds of letters to each other.

Sato: Well, if you still can't find it, there's a great bookshop by my school. They might be able to help you. 

Smith: Okey. I'll check it out on the weekend.

Sensei: What does "sponsor" exactly mean?

Chris: Usually it means somebody who gives financial support to, in this case, a drama group, for exapmle.

Roza: That's right. And the images of a this big financal entity standing next you, so standing by you. So sponsored by the three local conpanies.

 

Follow the recipe step by step and it should turn out fine.

 

Sensei: So I like this the expression, "little by little" or "bit by bit". Nothing changes over night when it comes to language learning, right?

Chris: Yes and as they say, the longest journey begins with a single step. So just keep studing step by step, and you'll reach your destination of speaking language English fluently.

Roza: That's right. You just have to keep going word by word, minute by minute, phrase by phrase, sentense by sentense, paragraph by paragraph, and page by page. Hey, are you guys gonna stop me?

Chris: So what are you into these days?
Sensei: Radio Eikaiwa, of course.

Chris: Well, if you go to France, you can stay in a small hotel called "pension". And if you go to Spain, you can stay in a small hotel called "pension", right? But the average native speaker, British, or American. We just understand pension as retirement money.
Roza: That's right.

Chris: Well, that's because you know you can't can always count on us, isn't it?
Roza: Yes, but please don't depend on us too much, especially Chris. 'Cause you never know what he made you.

Luke: It's great to see you again, Keiko. It has been over a year, hasn't it.

Luke: He went to Vietnam on business. He wants to open a restaurant in Hanoi.

Keiko: Do Vietnamese people like Mexican food?

Luke: I heard they appreciate the spicy flavor.

Keiko: I hope he is successful.

Sensei: What does "tour" exactly mean?

Roza: Well, "tour" means going around several different places. so a band on tour will would be going around contries the country or going around the world.

Chris: That's right. I mean the original meaning of "tour" is just around, so, to go around from place to place. And I wonder how many of our  listeners have made a the connection between this word and "tourist". A Tourist is a person who goes around visiting from place to place.

 

I know how to play "Bappy Birthday" on the guiter.

 

Sensei: So, "on the guiter" here is similar to " on the computer", right?

Chris: Absolutely.

Roza: That's right. It's the same kind of platform, image.

 

Sensei: Have you been to Vietnam?

Roza: I have never been to Vietnam. How about you, Chris?

Chris: Yeah, I've been to Vietnam and I did a wonderful tour of Vietnam. from the north Hanoi, right the way down through Da Nang and Hue, all the way to Ho Chi Minh City. One of the things you notice in Vietnam is a number of scooters. It can take you ages to cross the street because no one will stop for you, you know.
