Marlins agree to deal with veteran outfielder Ichiro Suzuki
The Marlins on Friday agreed to a one-year contract with 10-time All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki pending a physical, according to a source with direct knowledge.
The contract will pay him in the $2 million range.
Ichiro will become the Marlins’ fourth outfielder, behind starters Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna.
Ichiro, 41, hit .284 for the Yankees last season and was 6 for 13 as a pinch hitter. He is 156 hits away from reaching the 3,000 mark.
A former star in Japan, Ichiro began his Major League Baseball career with the Seattle Mariners in 2001 and played there until joining the Yankees in 2012. He won American League batting titles in 2001 and 2004.
