The rainy season comes in Japan. Be prepared for it and enjoy “Tsuyu,” the infamous rainy season!

For one month, the rainy season will come during the change of seasons, from spring to summer.

We have the nicest season of the year now, but soon will have the rainy season, which lasts for about a month. We call it “Tsuyu.” Most regions in Japan have it except for Hokkaido and the Ogasawara Islands.
Other Asian countries experience Tusyu around the same time and they could be considered some of the rainiest climates.
The word Tsuyu (梅雨), literally meaning “Ume and Rain,” was brought from China, and it is said that the word is derived from the way that Ume, or Japanese apricots, ripen during this season.

Japan has many names for rain.

Japan typically has lots of rain annually and to appreciate the blessed rain or to characterize each type of rainfall there are many ways to refer to them in Japan. For example, Tsuyu is also called Samidare, which literally means, “Rain in May.” There are also words such as Otoko-Zuyu and Onna-Zuyu, which mean “Man Rain” and “Woman Rain.” If it rained cats and dogs, it would be Otoko-Zuyu, and if it was just a light rain, it’s called “Onnna-Zuyu”. Isn’t it interesting?

Don’t get depressed during the rainy season! Popular rain related products will cheer you up.

During the Tsuyu season, the gloomy, cloudy, and rainy days seem to last forever, but there are many cute rain related goods that will cheer you up!

My recommendation is Rain boots.
Fashionable and stylish rain boots that you can even wear to the office are sold throughout Japan.

Another recommendation is a Poncho.
It’s very useful when taking your dog for a walk, or going shopping by bicycle.

Umbrellas are not only good for rain, but also can serve to protect you from UV rays and are popular among Japanese women.

Let’s find a variety of fun rain related goods and enjoy the rainy season in Japan!
