3-2-2: Do-forms
Variety of the use of “do” is seen in King James Version, from the original half auxiliary “do” as a “pro-verb” down to emphatic “do”, which is the latest use.
3-2-2-1: “do” as a “pro-verb”
“do” is used as a pro-verb to avoid repetition of the same verb.
Then he shall minister in the name of the Lord his God, as all his brethren the Levites do. (Deut. 18-7)
And we utterly destroyed then as we did unto Sihon. (Deut. 3-6)
3-2-2-2: “do” as auxiliary
“do” is often used as an auxiliary with other verbs to distinguish tense, for convenience of form, to make smooth rhythm.
Examples to distinguish tense:
Her husband with her and he did eat. (Gen. 3-6)
As they did eat (Matt. 26-21)
Therefore they did set over them taskmasters. (Ex. 1-11)
And Jacob did separate the lambs. (Gen. 30-40)
For my vesture they did case lots. (John 19-24)
Examples for convenience of form:
As thou didst anoint their father. (Ex. 40-15)
From the day that thou didst depart out of the land od Egypt. (Deut. 9-7)
To avoid awkward forms such as the second person singular of the past tense of anoint, depart, “do” is used. Didst anoint is easier to speak than departedst.
Examples to make smooth rhyhm:
A gift doth blind the eyes of the wise and pervert the words of the righteous. (Deut. 16-19)
When all the workers of iniquity do flourish. (Psalm 92-7)
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of water upon the earth. (Gen. 6-17)
Examples of emphatic “do”
Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh. (Gen.18-13-15)
Purely emphatic “do” in modern sense, where special vocal stress is given, is very rare in Kings James version.
3-2-3: Relative Pronouns
The common relatives of Bible English are that, which and who. No Rules can be discovered to govern the use of these relative pronouns. It is even said by James Moses Grainger in his writing “Studies in the Syntax
of the King James Version” that “It is exceedingly doubtful whether the translators themselves could distinguish at all clearly between the three
relatives in reference, meaning, or usage.”
Conclusion of Chapter 3
There are not that many changes in syntax between Kings James Version that is written in Middle English and New International Version in Modern English. This means New International Version, among the
modern versions, is the one whose sound and meaning is the closest to the original English translation made by Wycliffe. Reading Kings James Version with help of New International Version might make it
possible for us who understand modern English to understand Bible well.
How about Kings James Version? It is about 200 years that Kings James Version was published since the first Wycliffe’s text was made. As Wycliffe’s text was also written in Middle English, which was the same language as Kings James Version, I do not think there is much change in both versions.
