以前も載せたこの歌ですが・・・

これはスコットランドの
ベル・ダンカンという
おばあちゃんが歌っていた歌で。
によって、
1934年頃に
録音されたものです。
彼女はアバディーンシャー、
Insch（Inch？？）のLambhillに
住んでいました。
この動画説明欄には、
「Bell Duncan of Lambhill,
Inch, Aberdeenshire」
・・・と書かれていたのですが。
「Inch」というところは、
アバディーンシャーでは
なかったので。
おそらく、
「Insch」なのでは？
・・・と思ったのですが。
そこらへんは、
ちょっとあやふやです

ここでベルおばあちゃんは、
「Ower the hills a' far awa」
・・・というリフレインを使って
歌っていましたが。
これと似たリフレインを
持つ歌詞が。
チャイルドの『妖精の騎士』にも
見つけられます。

1826年8月23日に
Mearnsshire出身のM・キニアが
歌って、
それを、
ジョージ・リッチー・キンロックが
記録したもののようです。
キンロックは、
翌年の1827年に出版した、
p.145～p.152
・・・に、
この歌を掲載しました。
キンロックは、
ヴァージョンFの『Lord John』を
収集した人でもありましたね。
チャイルド・バラッドの
P.16に掲載されているものも、
これをそのまま
転載したもののようですが。
どうやら、
キンロックのこのヴァージョンは。
少し加工されているようで。
それに気づいたチャイルドは、
彼の本の中でそれについて
言及していたようです。
第３スタンザにある、
「the elfin knicht」
・・・という言葉も、
もともとはなかったもので、
あとから加筆されたもの
なのだとか。
それは本当は、
「（ただの）騎士」であり、
「妖精の騎士」では
なかったのだそうです

このキンロックを始め、
あの頃はマザウェルやバカンなど。
民謡を収集する人たちが
たくさんいたようですが。
彼らがどこまでそれを
正確に残していたのか。
・・・ということは、
実はあやふやだったりしますね。
人はよく、
「善意」で。
それを編集、変更したりします。
英語の翻訳などでも
そうなのですが。
それを読む人がより
解りやすくなるように。
・・・という気持ちから、
よかれと思って。
そこに、
「翻訳者フィルター」
・・・をかけてしまうもので。
そうすると、
原文にあったエネルギーが。
その風が。
ねじまげられて
消えてしまう。
・・・ということが。
悲しいことに、
よくあったりします。
これはもう、
仕方のないことなのですが。
きっとバラッドもそうやって。
当時の民族学者たちが
いじって変更したのだろうなぁ。
・・・と。
そんな気がしてしまいました

【スカボロー・フェア聴き比べ】
ウェールズのミュージシャン。
今は、「MAGENTA」という
バンドもやっているそうです。
この『スカボロー・フェア』は
なんだかすごく好きです
Robert Reed『Scarborough Fair』（2014）
オランダのミュージシャン。
これは、ロビンとバリーの
ドランスフィールド兄弟が
歌っていたメロディーと同じです。
余計なひねりのないシンプルな
『スカボロー・フェア』。
久しぶりに
フォークらしいフォークで。
こういう雰囲気、
落ち着きます

昔。
イギリス人のある先生から
ハーブについて教わったことがあり。
その時、
彼が自分のことを、
「吟遊詩人」
・・・だと言っていたのを
思い出しちゃった

ロブ・リード（ロバート・リード）の
『スカボロー・フェア』が
かなりツボだったので。
その彼がやっている
「MAGENTA」というバンドが
すごく気になってきました。
2020年に新作をリリース
していたようですが。
なんだかものすごく、
懐かしい感じがして。
泣きたくなってきました
