コロナ禍で、ニューヨーカーが一番ショックを受けたのが、ブロードウェイの閉鎖だった。
2020年3月のロックダウンから約1年半、タイムズスクウェアは廃墟のようだった。
「Broadway is back !（ブロードウェイが再開する！）」
このニュースに、全米が歓喜したのが、昨秋のこと。
人数の入場制限や、ワクチン接種の可否などで、客足が戻るのには時間がかかったが、
あれから１年近くが経過して、ブロードウェイはほぼ以前のような活気を取り戻している。
マスク着用アのナウンスはあったものの、満席の劇場内は熱気でいっぱい。
生前のマイケルジャクソン氏をそのまま見ているかのようなストーリーと演出に、
久しぶりに感激で心身が満たされた、大満足の作品だった。
シルク・ド・ソレイユの「ONE」では、テープで再現したMJの歌声だったけれど、
ブロードウェイでは、生のバンド、生の歌声、生のダンス、生の芝居が、目の前で展開される。
たくさんの秀逸なミュージカル作品が、日本人によって再現される機会はあるかもしれない。
しかしトニー賞で主演男優賞を受賞したマイルス氏演じるMJは、本場でしか観られない。
当初主役に決まっていた男優が、ロックダウンの影響でスケジュール確保ができなくなり、
代わりに大抜擢されたマイルス氏のブロードウェイデビュー作が、この大ヒットとなった。
トニー賞の「ミュージカル音響デザイン部門」を勝ち抜いた音響の余韻に浸りながら、
あれ以来、MJの曲ばかり回顧している。
そして、自分がすでにマイケルの年齢を超えている事実に驚くばかり。

The entire nation rejoiced at this news last fall.
It took a while for the crowds to return due to restrictions on the number of people entering the theater and the availability of vaccinations.
Nearly a year has passed since then, and Broadway is almost back to its former vigor.
Despite the announcements of "Put the mask on," the packed theater was enthusiastic.
The story and production were as if we were watching Mr. Michael Jackson as if he was alive.
It was the first time in a long time that my body and soul were filled with emotion, and I was delighted with the performance.
In Cirque du Soleil's "ONE," the producer reproduced MJ's singing voice on tape.
On Broadway, however, you are treated to a live band, live singing, live dancing, and live theatrical performances right in front of your eyes.
There may be opportunities for many excellent musicals to be recreated by the Japanese.
However, MJ, played by Miles, who won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, can only be seen in the U.S.
The actor originally slated for the lead role was unable to secure the schedule due to the lockdown, so he was chosen instead, and Miles' Broadway debut became a huge hit.
In the afterglow of the sound that won the "Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Musical," I've been retrospecting only MJ's songs ever since.
And I am amazed that I am already over Michael's age.
