一昨日に shoulder season というタイトルを付けて書いたのだが、別な記事を見てたら、またその語が出ていた。
その記事の中には、こんな英文もあった：

sell-by date とは、本来なら「賞味期限」のこと。
ただし、ここでは食品のことを述べているわけではないので
a time beyond which something or someone is no longer interesting or useful
（事物や人が、それを過ぎると、もはや興味の対象ではなくなったり、役に立たなくなったりする時）
という意味 （→ Longman [sell-by date]）。
past が付くと「賞味期限切れ」であるということになるが、食品のことではないとなると、「(そんな考えは) もう通用しない」ということになるのだろう。
