I sensed that they teach "should" and "'d better" share similar usage in Japan; giving advice. However, some Japanese ESL students who have come to notice the difference between them and write about it. The problem is their description is not accurate just because they are not native English speakers. This is what I add.
日本では、「should」と「'd better」は、アドバイスを与えるために使うという同じ意味を持つと教えていることに気づきました。しかし、日本人の英語学習者の中には、この2つの違いに気づくようになって、その違いを書いている人を見かけます。問題は、単にネイティブの英語話者でないということが理由で、その解説が正確ではないのです。私は以下を加えておきます。
Read the following.
下の文章を読んでください。
You should quit smoking. （タバコ止めたら？）
You'd better quit smoking or you'll die. （タバコ止めないと、死ぬわよ。）
I think now you noticed the difference.
違いはおわかり頂けたと思います。
"Should" is used to give advice, whereas "'d better" is for more urgent warning with serious consequences if you don't follow it.
「should」はアドバイスを与えて、「'd better」の場合は、そのアドバイスに従わないと、とんでもない結果が待っているという警報に近いアドバイスです。
Therefore, I do not expect you to overuse "'d better" to anyone except for your intimate, loved ones including yourself.
ですから、自分も含めごく親しい愛する人のため意外は、「'd better」を多発することはないことを期待します。
