昨夜、スターバックスで、買ったパッションフルーツのハーブティーを飲みながら、外の席に座ってインターネットを見ていました。
There came a group of young gentlemen, around 22 or so, maybe just graduated from college, sat down at the next table.
そこへ、若者、みんな２２くらいかな、大学出たてくらいの男性のグループがきて、私の隣のテーブルに座りました。
Among their conversations, I overheard a distinctive Japanese accent. I looked over and found this young man, who is obviously a Japanese national, was speaking English relatively at ease. He did not try to pronounce words overly Anglicized, but about the important parts of the pronunciations, he was careful.
その会話のアチラコチラに、すぐ日本人だと分かる訛りのある英語が混ざって聞こえてきました。見渡すと、明らかに日本人とおぼしき若者が、比較的容易に英語を話しているのが見えました。発音も、必要以上に英語的に発音しようとせず、重要なところはしっかり押さえようと注意しているのが分かりました。
When he made an obvious mispronunciation, his friends around him corrected him. He repeated it and went on to talk. When he stopped to search words, his friends made suggestions. He thanked them and used one of the words and continued his nice talk.
明らかに発音をミスってしまった場合には、回りの友人たちがこともなげに正し、彼はそれを繰り返してから、また話を続けます。言葉が浮かばず、話に詰まれば、みな彼の言いたい言葉を口々にいいます。彼は感謝し、その中から言葉を選び、楽しい話は続いていくのでした。
I thought his English was intelligent and beautiful. He was very natural in his demeanor and very diligent in what he was learning.
私は、彼の英語は知的で綺麗だと思いました。彼は振る舞いが自然で、学ぶことには勤勉でした。
I talked with him for a minute or so after briefly self-introduced as a Japanese and American. He joined an international youth club from Tokyo. He studied his English only at schools. I thought his mind was in a good place.
日本人であって、アメリカ人だと短い自己紹介をしてから、1,2分彼と話をしました。彼は国際的な若人のクラブに東京から参加して来たそうです。それに彼は学校で英語を勉強しただけだそうです。私は、彼の心が素直であると思いました。
This is the way I would suggest anyone who wants to speak English to speak it, and to be able to speak and express him/herself in English.
英語を話したいと思う皆さんに、私はこういう話し方をすることをお奨（すす）めします。そして、英語で自分の意見を言えるようになっていただきたいと思います。
Like him, by placing our mind in the right place, our intellectual curiosity will increase. On the other hand, if our mind was in the wrong place, alas, our wishes and dreams will remain as they are.
彼のように、精神を正しい置き場所に置くことで、知的好奇心が湧くでしょう。その一方、心の場所があらぬところにあれば、悲しいかな、願いや夢はそのまま、何時までも願いと夢のままであり続けるでしょう。
This young man told me after leaving me his mobile phone number, "Please do not hesitate to call me. I will help you with your Japanese." He got me.
この若者は、自分の携帯の番号を私に送ってから、「迷わないで電話してね。日本語助けてあげる。」
