本日の英語： 「携帯メール」／「携帯メールする」
どうも。大雨の近畿地方からお送りしております。
あまりにも激しい雨のため、本日は外出する気になれないので
この1週間に受け取った中でもっともヘンだった携帯メールを公開する所存だ。
それは筆者の「万博公園」友達・J子から来た。*1
この水曜日、J子がメールしてきたその文面は：
「なんかセンパイってドロンジョ様に似てますね。」
というものだった。
他には何も書いていないこれだけの文面を朝の9時過ぎに
送ってきたJ子。
子育てしながら働き、夫の世話もする感心なJ子。
朝起きて子供には幼児食、夫には普通食を用意し、
自分は食べたか食べてないか良くわからない感じで慌しく食事を済ませ、
家族3人分の洗濯もすませてつかの間ホッと一息・・・そんなタイミングで
「センパイってドロンジョに似てるなあ。」
などという考えがどこから沸いて出たのか？
誰でも思うと思うが、筆者も思ったので
「アンタ、朝から何言ってんの？」
と返信したが、返事なし。
J子あんた、こんなワケわからんことを
言い捨てかい！
まあいい。
本人に褒めたつもりはないと思うが、
筆者はドロンジョ様はスカポンタンではあるが、
めっちゃイイ女だと思っているので
褒め言葉として頂いておいたのは、
言うまでもない。
なんだよオイ、J子～、ベタ褒めか？も、このやろー。
じゃ、また万博公園で。
*1万博公園友達とは、万博公園以外ではほとんど
会わず、会うと必ず1回は「太陽の塔」をトピックに
会話するのを常とする関係のことを言う。

How's everything?
I am writing this from Kinki in a raging rainstorm.
I can't go out in this crazy rain, so I'd like to show you
the weirdest text message I got in the past week.
It's from my "EXPO '70 Park" buddy, J-ko. *1
This Wednesday she texted me as follows;
"You know you kinda look like Doronjo."
There weren't anything else in the message Just this.
And she texted this at a ittle past 9:00 in the morning.
She is a working mother with a baby boy and a husband.
She wakes up, hurriedly fixes two different kinds of breakfast; one for her boy and
two for her husband and herself. She doesn't even have time to
care what she's eating, and right after breakfast she starts doing laundry
for three of her family. She finishes, and sits for just a while.....
and out of the blue she comes up with the idea;
"Hmmm, she actually looks like Doronjo, doesn't she?"
I mean, where did that come from??
I thought what anybody would think, and texted her;
"What on earth are you saying at this hour of the day??"
And got no reply.
Oh, so you texted me the weirdest message of the week, and
don't even care how I'd react?!
That's fine.
I'm sure complimenting wasn't her intention, but
I always think that Doronjo, although she is pretty foolish, is
actually very attractive and sexy, so
I took it as a compliment of course.
He-e-e-ey, J-ko, what are you doing so utterly flattering me?!

*1 "EXPO '70 Park" buddy means a buddy with whom you
hang around almost only inside the EXPO '70 Park, and with whom
you talk about the Tower of the Sun at least once per session.

日本語でメールといえば携帯メールもPCメールも指すが、
英語では呼び方が違う。
PCメールは
Emali
などで、注意したいのはとにかく「E」を忘れるな、
っちゅー点。
日本語でも昔は「電子メール」といっていたが、
面どくさいからほとんど 「電子」 を言わなくなった。
しかし英語では郵便がメール mail なので「電子」を
省略することはできず、まあElectronicとかはめんどくさいけど
Eだけは言わないとな、というわけよ。
ほんで、携帯のメールは
text message (文字のメッセージ）
といい、携帯メールすることは
text （文字を打つ・送る）
という。
なぜかというと、たぶん
音声を送るのが本来の機能である携帯電話で文字を送るのは
「音の変わりに」という気持ちが働いているためと思われる。
text message とは、音じゃなくて文字のメッセージ、ということなのだ。
