今日の英語： 「イタイ」／「後悔させない」
毎年11月22、23日は神農祭だ。
大阪市・道修町に位置する「少彦名神社」の祭礼である。
道修町は太閤秀吉*の時代から薬種問屋が
集まって商いをしており、
現代でも数多くの製薬会社が本社を置いている。
少彦名神社はそんな製薬会社と日本中の薬局薬店の
商売を守ってくれる神様のおわす神社なのだ。
だから、このお祭りはビル街のど真ん中で
行なわれる。
筆者は長らく道修町で働いていたので
この日は毎年欠かさずお参りし、屋台ものを
食べるのを楽しみとしている。
今年も行くことができた。よかった。
さて、今年はさらに、思いがけない大きなオマケがあった。
「無料コンサートがすぐそこの教会で始まってますよ～」
と呼びかけられ、普通なら絶対行かないのに、
筆者の母校である関西学院大学グリークラブOBが
出演してます、と聞いて、さらに常々中を見たいと思っていた
教会でやるということで、ちょっとだけ聴いてスグ帰ろう
と思っていたら・・・これが、ものすごく楽しかったのだ。
花のないおっさん4名がぞろぞろ出てきて、
アカペラでコーラスしますってことで、
（まあグリークラブOBなら下手ってことはなかろうから、ハイ、歌って。）
程度に思っていたら・・・
めちゃくちゃ上手かった。
めちゃくちゃ、上手かった。
アメリカ生まれのコーラススタイルということで
とってもアメリカンな、アメリカ人がやってもイタイような
振り付けで歌うのだが、歌が絶対的に上手いから全然痛くなく。
どころか、だんだん愛おしくなってきて、8曲全部聴き終わったときには
筆者、感激で一杯になっており、4人の姿が舞台袖に消えてしまっても、
まだ心よりの拍手を惜しみなく送り続けたのだった。
次はどこでやるのか、帰宅後たちどころに調べたら
超立派なHPがあった：

Every year on November 22 and 23,
there is a Shinto festival called "Shin-no sai"
at Sukunahikona Shrine in Doshomachi, Osaka.
Doshomachi has been a home to hundreds of
medicine wholesalers since the time of Hideyoshi Toyotomi
in the 16th century.
Numbers of pharmaceutical companies of today
still have their headquarters in this district.
Sukunahikona Shrine is a guardian to these companies
and pharmacies and drug stores throughout Japan.

Since I was working in this area for quite a long time,
I go to this festival every year without an exception.
I was able to go this year too.
Now, this year, an unexpected fun was added.
On the street, a man was calling out that
there was a free concert in the nearby church.
In normal circumstances, I would never be interested,
however, he said that the performers are some glee club
alumni of Kwansei Gakuin Univ., where I also graduated from,
and moreover, the church was the one I've long wanted to go in.
So, I decided to go and listen to the performance only
for a short time.
And, OH, MY GOD, it was fabulous.
Four completely mediocre-looking old dudes appeared and
said they were gonna sing a cappella.
I was like, OK, go ahead. At least I know you can't be too bad.
And, oh, my god,
They were wonderful.
They were absolutely wonderful.
They are a barbershop chorus group, so they sing with
very American gestures which usually make me feel embarrassed.
But, well, they were not at all embarrassing.
Their absolute skill and presence made it look OK.
As the concert went on, I kind of fell in love with them, and
when they finished their last tune, I just had to give applause
to these guys.
I was filled with enthusiasm. I was thrilled.
I could keep clapping my hands forever for them.
I checked them out as soon as I was home because
I had to know where they will be next.

I recommend that you check it out.
I'm afraid they still look mediocre to me even now
when I still am thrilled by them.
But, they will never disappoint you. Never.
They should try American Idol.
