今日の国際社会にかかせない英語表現： 「持って帰ります」
とあるカフェの壁に書いてあった英語が面白かったので、ご紹介しよう。
A sign on the wall of a cafe I went the other day was kind of funny. Let me show it to you.
問題箇所を拡大すると I'll make it easier for you to see the funny part.
「それ今すぐここで食べろ。お願いですから。早く！」 Eat it, please. Now. Do you hear me?
まずは強く「Eat it」と命令しておいて、ちょっとマズイと思って「please」とフォローしたが、
すかさず大文字始まりで強調した「Now」をつけて、「イヤとは言わせん」という感じに
仕上げているところを見ると、相当言うことをきかせたいようだ。
こんなに頼まれてしまっては、とても「持って帰ります。」とか言い出せない。
真意がなんなのかはわからない。
Started firmly with "Eat it!", then thinking that that was maybe a little too strong, added "please,"
but then again with "Now," made sure it'll happen.
All these indicate how important it is to them that "it" is eaten here now.
Relax. If you are so desperate about that, I will never say "Make it to-go."
As to the real intention of the sign, I don't know.
