Kaizen & Coffee
Honey Lavender & Mission Mocha
Mission Mocha
"Dandelion Chocolate, Vietnamese Cinnamon, Gochugaru Red Pepper, Heavy Cream"
Mocha & Black Sesame with Oat Milk

Hello everyone!
A coffee shop and cafe nearby a Japanese grocery store, Nijiya in San Mateo;
Kaizen & Coffee
Their name, Kaizen, caught my attention as a word is from Japan. The online reviews were positive and apparently, it’s popular among the local people. As it’s located on the main street, El Camino, it’s a bit painful to find a parking. It’s a small space but a lot of people come and go.
They have unique drink menu. For the first visit, we had the Honey Lavender and the Mission Mocha which was made with “Dandelion Chocolate, Vietnamese Cinnamon, Gochugaru Red Pepper, Heavy Cream” The Honey Lavender was easy to drink and tasted well. The Mission Mocha was spicer than we expected. I thought you’d like it more and more as you drink it but it didn’t get any less spicy.
For the second time, we had, the Mocha and the Black Sesame with Oat Milk. The Mocha was a regular type and my partner liked it. The Black Sesame was very sesame and creamy.
The painting on the wall at the entrance got attention. They use Rishi for teas. I was curious about Hojicha Latte and Mango Matcha.
According to Palo Alto Online, Jason Naraja and Shane Balasbas opened this specialty coffee shop in 2023 after a few years of studying and training on coffee and learning from coffee leaders in the region. The name has double meanings, their son’s name, Kaizen, and the Japanese word, 改善, “the concept of continuous improvement.”
They said, “We felt San Mateo is a pretty underserved market for specialty coffee,” and “There’s Blue Bottle and Philz, but few mom-and-pop coffee shops in town.” I’d agree and can imagine they are popular as a rare speciality coffee shop and cafe in the area. Apparently, they have some pastries from Firebrand Artisan Breads from Oakland.
