今朝UG先生から頂いたスカンディナビアにある木造高層ホテルに関する記事からです。

今回取り上げるのはharness / ˈhɑːnəs / です。文脈より「活用する」と意味を推測しました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第４版)には「＜自然の力などを＞ 動力化する; ＜感情など＞ を利用する」,「«…に» ＜動物など＞ を結びつける, つなぐ; «仕事などに» ＜人＞ を縛り付ける」と定義されています。
LDOCEには“to control and use the natural force or power of something”, “to fasten two animals together, or to fasten an animal to something using a harness”と定義されています。今回の記事では第一義が用いられています。
Online Etymology Dictionaryには“"to put a harness on a draught animal," c. 1300, from Old French harneschier "make ready, equip, arm," from harnois (see harness (n.)); figurative sense "to control for use as power" is from 1690s. Related: Harnessed; harnessing.” との語源解説があります。
またharnessは元々「鞍」を意味します。当然乗馬する際の欠かせないものであるということから、本文のharnessは「〜を基盤とする」というニュアンスが含まれていると教えていただきました。
本文ではharness its wood resources「原産の木材を利用し」と解釈することができると思われます。
使われている語彙、文法事項に「なぜ」という疑問を向けて、どうしてそれが用いられているのかを考える姿勢が大切だと先生から教えていただいています。まだまだ自分の力だけでは深く読むということは難しいですが、少しづつ出来るように練習していきます。
