driving rain を取り上げます。文脈から「大雨」と推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版には、動詞 drive の第4義に「<風・雨が>[…に]吹き[打ち]つける、ぶつかる」とありました。Cambridge English Dictionary は “rain or snow that is falling fast and being blown by the wind” と定義しています。
つまり、driving rain を「土砂降りの雨」や「横殴りの雨」と訳しても良いかと思います。
ちなみに、driving rain の前に “the heavens opened” という表現があります。これは「ひどい雨が降った」という意味です。この表現については、以前draさんがブログで取り上げていました。inputした表現が新聞記事に出てくると嬉しいです。 (amphibian)
