今回取り上げるのは dangle a carrot /ˈdæŋɡəl ə ˈkærət/ です。carrot を使ったイディオムを初めて見て、どんな意味を含有するのか気になったため、辞書で調べてみました。
まず、そもそも dangle とcarrot がそれぞれどんな意味合いをもっているのか、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）で調べてみました。
dangle は、「～からだらりとたれる、ぶら下がる、ぶらぶら揺れる」とありました。carrotを調べてみたところ 「ニンジン」の意味の他に、「報酬 ; 励みになるもの(事)」と意外な意味がありました。
さらにLDOCE でも carrot 意味を確認すると “something that is offered to someone in order to try and persuade them to do something” と定義されていました。
これらを踏まえて、「報酬やいい事、いい話などをちらつかせる」と訳せると思います。ちなみに、この carrot と同じ意味合いで使ったイディオムは他にも、 “carrot and (the) stick (approach)” 「あめとむち」がG5に記載されています。
