気になったのは、torrential / tɔːrénʃəl /です。torrent / tɔ́(ː)rənt / の形容詞の形だと思い、｢急流のような｣の意味を持つのではないかと推測しました。
早速、辞書で意味を調べていきます。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』 (第5版 大修館書店) では、「急流のような、激しい｣と載っていました。a torrential rain / ｢豪雨｣ はよく使われる表現です。
また、LDOCEには “Two fire crews from Bury attended the crash which happened in a torrential downpour”“As El Ni o ebbs away, drought follows the torrential rain.”と定義されています。
また、｢激流｣はa violently fast stream of water とあります。これは水などの液体の流れが急激である時の名詞ですが、torrential の例文として;
“torrential anger”｢激しい怒り｣
“a torrential flow of words”｢ほとばしり出る言葉｣
などが挙げられます。
torrentialは水などの液体を修飾するだけではなく、幅広い場面で用いることの出来る形容詞ということがわかりました。(Lee)
