取り上げるのはupkeep /ˈʌpkiːp/ です。 “keep up” という句動詞に置き換えて考えると、何やら見えてくるものがあります。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(家屋・自動車・道路・地所などの)管理、維持、保全、営繕、維持費、(子供・動物の)養育(飼育)費」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “the process of keeping something in good condition” “the cost or process of looking after a child or animal and giving them the things they need” と定義されています。さらにupを用いた、同様の形の単語を調べると “upturn” “upstart” “uptake” など様々なものが見つかりました。
中には、ラクダミルクを使用したチョコレートもあります。普通のものと比べて、どのように味が違うのでしょうか。一度、口にしてみたいです。(seventh-dan)
