―内村さんと羽生さんに共通する「美しさ」。「美」へのこだわりについて。
「美しいって感じるのは人それぞれですけど。でも体操を分かる人だけでなく分からない人にも『なんか、美しいな』って思われることってすごく大事だと思っていて。自分にしか出せない魅力だと思うんですよ。ちゃんとした基本の技術がないと、そこは出せない。競技を見ているっていう感覚じゃなくさせるのが本物だと思うんです。例えば、技が描く放物線とかも考えたりするんですよ。
- Regarding “beauty”, I think there’s a common concept about it between Uchimura-san and Hanyu-san, what is your stance on “beauty”?
"Whether you think it’s beautiful or not, it depends on person. However, I think it’s important even people who are not interested in Gymnastics would feel beauty from my performance. And I think I can show such beauty, it would be my attractive point. But without obtaining the basic skills, you can’t perform beautifully. I think the true performance can make audience of a competition feel as if they are not watching “skills”. For example, I carefully think about parabolas drawn by my maneuvers, while conducting them, making images of parabolas. "
「羽生くんもジャンプの放物線が、めちゃくちゃきれいなんですよ。跳び出しから着氷までの山が、すごくバランスがいい。すごくきれいに徐々に上がっていって、緩やかに落ちていくっていう。距離もある。ここまで考えている人はあまりいないかも」
Hanyu-kun too, parabolas he makes with his jumps are terribly beautiful. From a taking-off to landings, the curve line he makes is well balanced. Very beautifully curving up, and gently curving down. And it has a well distance. Not so many athletes think about such so carefully, I think.”

―２人の演技は、競技に詳しくない人が見ても違いが分かると耳にする。
「そうですね、そこにこだわりを持つか持たないかだと思うんですよね。なんで美しいかっていうのを言語化するのって難しいじゃないですか。その『なんか』っていうふんわりしたのがすごい大事なのかなって。ちゃんと説明できたら、美しさって、美しさじゃなくなっちゃう。説明できないけど、なんか…っていうのがいいのかなあっていう。緩急だったり、メリハリだったり。空中でフワッとするっていうところとか。なんかそういうところに多分、羽生くんはこだわってると思うんですよね。普通の人がただ滑るところも何か工夫しているはずなんですよ」
- Often we hear that even people who are not familiar with the sprots can feel that performances by both of you are something different from others’.
"Well, yes. It comes whether or not you are particular about the details. It’s quite difficult to explain why it is beautiful in words. Something vague, but it’s very important, I think. When “beauty” is defined by words, then it would not be “beauty” anymore. You can’t explain, but somehow you feel, that would be fine. It would come from the gap made by high and low speed or sharp and gentle, etc, like fluffy image in the air. I think probably Hanyu-kun is very much particular about such beauty. Probably he’s using lots energy even parts where other skaters don’t care, but just skating."
