メジャーデビュー曲である『Becky From The Block』は、ご存知ジェニファー・ロペスの2002年の大ヒット曲『Jenny From The Block』のアレンジカバー。
ジェイ・ロー本人がカメオ出演したことでも話題となりました。
有名になる前の自身のルーツをラップにしたベッキーの歌詞。
以前にジャヴァイアちゃんの『17 (Seventeen) 和訳』の記事でも書きましたが、LAというとセレブの豪邸が思い浮かんだりしますが、この歌詞を見ても貧富格差の激しい地域なのだとつくづく思わざるをえません。
カリフォルニア州モレノバレーで幼い頃を過ごしたベッキーですが、ベッキーが9歳の時、一家の経済状況が極端に悪くなり、カリフォルニア州イングルウッドにある祖父の家の改造したガレージに移り住みます。
メキシコからの移民である祖父の家は、いわゆるヒスパニック居住地（Barrio）と呼ばれる場所のよう。
イングルウッドは貧困層以下がほとんどで、黒人とヒスパニックが多くの割合を占め、白人は20％に満たない人口とのこと。（2000年統計）
家計を助けるためにコマーシャルやナレーションのバイトを始める訳ですが、それが現在のスターへの道の最初の扉であったと同時に、とても過酷な時期の渦中でもあったようです。
学校ではいじめを受け、自宅学習へと切り替えなければならなくなったりしたそうで、困難な時代を家族の絆で乗り越えてきたのがうかがえます。

ほんとこの曲、ずぅーっと訳したかったのですが、力が足りずなかなか進みませんでした。3年越しでようやく完成させてみました。

⚠️訳について⚠️
・the Kelso Market → イングルウッドのウェストケルソー通りに位置する店のこと。MVに登場しているお店です。
・West Side → 以前『Secrets 和訳』の記事でも載せましたが再掲。本物のギャングスタ（ストリートギャングやヤクザ者の事を表すスラング）が沢山居ることでも有名なアメリカ西海岸の地域を、WestSideと呼ぶ。
・In-N-Out → イン・アンド・アウト・バーガーは、アメリカ合衆国の南西部や中部で展開しているファストフードのチェーンストア。
・405 drive → 南カリフォルニアの主要高速道路。ロサンゼルスの脇からロングビーチ沿いに走っている405号線のこと。フリーウェイで車線も多く飛ばす車も多い。
・on Hollywood and Vine → ハリウッド大通りとバイン通りの交差点。通りは「ハリウッド・ウォーク・オブ・フェイム」となっている場所で、5kmほどの間に、エンターテイメント界で活躍した人物の名前が彫られた星型のプレートが埋め込んである。
・Randy's Donuts → ロサンゼルスではお馴染みの、大きなドーナツオブジェの外装のドーナツショップ。
・the hood → neighborhoodの略と、パーカーのフードのこと。
・barrio →ヒスパニック居住地、メキシコ人街のことを言う。
・my 'litas → スペイン語の abuelita（おばあちゃん、おばあさん）の略の複数形。
