Artist Introduction: Makoto Ishigami was born in Shizuoka in 1953. When he was 13 years old, he encountered with the works of France painter Eugene Delacroix who represent the 19th century romanticism. This encounter made him aspire to becoming a painter. Although he is influenced by a word of Delacroix “a painting is a peaceful bridge between a painter and a beholder”, his drawing technique is not very much into Delacroix’s works. Almost all of his works are created through getting the idea from Venice. He has been fascinated by Venice since his first visit to Venice in 1989 and he felt as if he were here in Venice in a past life by looking at the swaying light, water, air and landscape in which the past and present are intermingled. From this experience, he got an inspiration of “Eternal Life” which is a main theme of his works. Since then, he has been trying to draw the theme on canvas.
