友達に、ちょうど1年前頃。
「なあ、草間彌生の展示会を東京まで見に行こうぜ」と言われました。
旅費まで出してやるよ、と基本、金のない私のことまで余計な心配してくれました。がはははは。
でも、父のこともあり、母も亡くなったばかりだったので、結局のところは、ボツとなりました。
草間彌生の本の中にこんなことが書いてあります。
「一メートルくらいからの距離から顔をじっと見つめられた。私は田舎から出てきたばかりで、先生は、この伊豆の踊子みたいな少女が描いたのか、と思われたのかもしれません。でも、男性に見つめられたことなんてなかったから、少し怖かったほど」 確か、読売新聞か何かでした。
その先生とは、川端康成です。三島由紀夫の先生でもあります。
彼は、実に美を見る慧眼を持っていました。
小林秀雄と闇市で、拾って集めた仏像は、もう今では、国宝級だそうですから。
その彼の偉いところは、伝統モダン、有名無名関係なく、自分の審美眼だけを頼りに、パッと絵を買うのです。
当時は草間彌生は26歳。4度個展をやっていましたがまだまだ無名。
川端は55歳。
林芙美子の夫の経営する画廊だったので、文芸春秋社の隣のビルらしく、川端もふらりと、立ち寄ったらしいです。
川端と東山魁夷の友情も素晴らしく、晩年の彼を支えたことでしょう。
東山魁夷もまた絵の中にあの有名な白い馬が生まれてくるのは、その頃ですから、人の出会いというものは、不思議なものです。
