1番重要なポジション

サッカーで1番重要なポジションはなにか。

当然選手である。

いや、

違う。

マネージャーであるという。

はたしてそうだろうか。

 

その理由を聞いて納得せざるをえなかった。

つまりはこうだ。

 

11人に指示を出し、

おもいどおりに動いてもらわなくてはならない。

リザーブをいれれば16人。

しかも勝たなくてはならない。

それが監督。

それがマネージャーである、

という。

ほとんどのチームがなしとげられずにいる。

 

いくさに勝つのは兵の強さであり、

いくさに負けるのは将の弱さであるという。

つまり将には責任があるばかりで、

いいことがない。

そうおもっていた。

 

サッカーはスポーツであり、

いくさとは違う。

たしかであるが将は将。

似てはいよう。

 

するとチームの優劣はそのまま監督の差ということになってしまうじゃないか。

選手はいったいどこへいってしまったのか。

 

サッカーの監督は割の合わないポジションにすぎないとおもっていた。

The Manager

 

What is the most important position in soccer. Naturally, the players.

No, I was told otherwise. The manager, they said. Could that be true.

 

I had no choice but to accept the reason. 

It goes like this.

 

You must give instructions to eleven players, and have all eleven move as you intend. Sixteen, if you count the reserves. And you must win. That is the coach. That is the manager, they said.

 

In war, victory belongs to the strength of the soldiers, and defeat to the weakness of the general. The general bears responsibility only, and nothing good comes of it. So I had thought.

 

Soccer is a sport, not war. True enough, yet a general is still a general. They resemble each other.

 

Then the strength of a team may simply be the difference between managers. Where have the players gone.

 

I had thought the manager’s role in soccer was nothing but a thankless position.
